Sometimes in life, we get stuck into certain patterns that, if not in the present moment but in retrospect, make us realize that we'd been focusing/ believing in the wrong things for so long in our lives. And if that retrospect , somehow, has a happy ending then you can freely laugh about your past paradigms, but if it has a sad ending, then only regret follows.

We are all creatures of circumstance and it is only natural that we find ourselves swept with the tide of external conditions. Consider the example of losing something very precious to you. It could be an item or even someone you love dearly. Within that moment there is grief , anger, resentment or any other of the many emotions of loss and injustice. The lingering of these emotions can really take a toll on your physical and emotional state so it’s imperative  that they be mitigated. But to counter, the pain of, such a loss is not very easy to do. They say time heals all wounds and true it is. But another way of making such conditions more bearable is to look at them from a different point of view. A different paradigm, a different lens of reality.

Everything happens for a reason and whatever your going through must have happened for a reason too, Whether you are aware of it or not remains to be questioned. But brooding over it will not ease your pain or bring you back into alignment to a path that is favorable to replacing or growing beyond “what you lost”. Try to look at the bigger picture of life and you will automatically see the trivialness of your worries.

For example, some things that I’ve encountered are:

1)       Concern about my future : What’ll I do?, Where will I work?, where will I live?   This is a problem that arises when you start projecting too much into the future and it’s a worry that exists only if you are unsure about “yourself.” If you know what your goals in life are then you won’t be bothered by such thoughts. If you are, then you need to start believing in your ability to achieve it more strongly. That is, you have yet to find out “who you are and what your drives and passions are” What is important is to come to terms with the worst case scenario. Push comes to shove you got to tell yourself that “Hey, even if I got to slum it out temporarily, I KNOW that I’m a hard worker and I WILL ACHIEVE WHATEVER I SET MY MIND TO.” This kind of fire and courage will help you rid yourself of the anxiety and feeling of weakness which you might be feeling.

2)       Lost a valuable possession: I lost my iPod nano just when it had been newly released and was the talk of the town. I was devastated, because it cost me a fortune and was very dear to me, but what was done is done. I wrapped my mind around it by accepting that everything happens for a reason and looking at the bigger picture. The picture here was that, the nano had way too many features and quite honestly would have been a terribly successful distraction for me. Movies, music, games, eBooks. I’m pretty sure, that with my discipline level, I would have wasted away weeks of my life on that thing, without anything productive to show for it. So in that sense, and I knew this to be true because I have experienced such “life enveloping” technologies before, there was a definite plus side to my losing it.

3)       Being in an accident or finding out that you have a disease: A few years ago, I was playing squash and ended up on the wrong side of my  opponents service. Suffice to say I ended up with a messy broken nose. For those who have experienced this, getting hurt on the nose is the kind of pain that can immobilize you instantly At the time, I was cursing the situation and scoffed at the injustice. It was only when I saw the bigger picture that I found some consolation and closure to the calamity. Breaking my nose was a good experience for me to know what life is like for those of us who are suffering or are in hospitals. Mine wasn’t a fatal problem, but I could still understand , at least a glimmer of , what others must have to go through.  In addition, looking at it from a different angle, I could have been hurt in much more delicate areas but thank god I wasn’t. It could have been much worse, but It wasn’t. One has to be thankful for that.

Enough with examples, what I wish to convey is that, there are always multiple ways to look at any situation in life.  There are always going to be good times and bad times. What’s important is that no matter what event occurs, we learn to look at it with a lens  of “desirability” Instead of judging things as good or bad, we need to review them in a different light. Instead of burdening your mind over how bad you feel, try to look at it , from a position of, “what’s the benefit that I can derive from this occurrence?” If you focus from this position, it’s always going to help you see the brighter side of things and learn to keep you energies raised, even when it may appear that circumstances are trying to bring them down.

What is happiness? When will we actually achieve or attain true happiness? I guess no one really has the answer to these questions and those who have given us answers, have those answers open to interpretation. But we all have a sense of what happiness is like, what that feeling is, what it causes inside of us and how it makes us see the beauty and glory in everything and everyone.

Many of us believe, that real happiness will come into our lives only when we find that one true person whom we love, who loves us back and is our perfect soul mate. I personally used to think along those lines too, that all my life problems, dissatisfaction and unhappiness would be gone, If I managed to find the perfect girl for myself. Let's be honest, So many of us truly believe that if we can find that perfect someone special, then all the happiness in the world would come rushing into our lives and we'll live happily ever after...just like the perfect Disney story.

It's almost everyone's hidden or sometimes displayed, heartfelt desire to have someone special in their life. And I think It's great. It's wonderful actually. It's our innate, natural god given desire, so it's cool for us to be open about it and not hide it.

The Problem

The problem arises when we start thinking that happiness will come to us ONLY when we find that someone 'RIGHT', that happiness will only show itself in all it's splendor when we're in that relationship with them. And THIS is where things start to fall apart.

By thinking in these terms, like this. We end up making our happiness dependent on something outside of our realm of control. Like the weather. You can't control the weather and similarly you can't control when you're going to meet the RIGHT person. Consider this; what are the chances of a Disney style 'happily ever after' happening in real life? 1 in a 1000? considering reality, it's more like 1 in a 1000000 (million). Do you really want to put your happiness on something that has those kinds of odds? Now I'm not saying that perfect couples don't exist. I'm just saying that it's a rare occurrence and instead of waiting on chance for that rarity to occur in your life. You should learn to live for your own happiness.

You can't keep holding yourself back from life and happiness, thinking that happiness will happen only when you find that special someone. Look inside of you...DEEP inside of you and many of you might find that you're holding your happiness hostage consciously or most probably subconsciously. Do you really want something other than yourself , to be in control of your happiness? I don't.

The solution

Is there a solution? I mean, these things are natural and inbuilt. We can't deny our instinctual tendency to expect and look forward to the happiness we foresee in the future, of being with that special someone. I agree. But the key here, is to look forward to the future, but not suffer due to it, in the present. you can't live your life by 'copping out' to the excuse that happiness will come only when you meet 'Prince/princess charming.' Don't be so shallow and naive or rather in many cases LAZY. You can't give in to the belief, that a single event/person is the main source of happiness in your life. Things don't work that way and that's the WONDERFUL part about it!!

You don't Need a reason to be happy. It's all inbuilt. It's the natural order of beings. The innate mode of the soul, the spirit in you,is to be HAPPY. It makes me sad to think that most of the world has been fooled ( read programmed) into thinking that you need a REASON to be HAPPY.

What to do next

My dad used to say that if you love what you're doing, then everything will automatically come to you in abundance and this implies for the right person too, to come into your life. So start actually LIVING your life.

It's like the song by T.I. - live your life. Just live your life and do the things that you know would give you lasting fulfillment. Get a new job, make some music, write a book, dance, travel the world, meet new people( usually the best for a lot of reasons), start gardening, fashion designing...Do anything that makes you happy and have the COURAGE to do it.

Do the things in life that naturally make you happy regardless of what other people say. You don't need approval or anyone's permission to be happy and do what you love. By doing the things that challenge, excite and enlighten you, you satisfy the soul and open yourself up to the universe and everything else, even that special someone will, in their due time, enter into your life. :)

As someone whose made a lot of mistakes in my life, I've often found myself thinking about the past and all the different decisions I could have made and different paths that I could have walked down. I'm sure many of the readers have felt that way as well. Thoughts would creep up in my head like, "If only I'd said that", “I shouldn’t have done that", “Why did I hesitate?" and more of the like. A perfect word to describe it would be regret, regret of the past, just another one of the things that was unhealthy for my mental peace. But that wasn't the only thing destroying my mental peace.
Many times I've found myself so in love with someone, that'd I'd have trouble being without them. I'd feel disturbed, uncomfortable, out of place in their absence. I guess obsessed would be a good word for it. But there have also been many times, where my mental peace was disturbed not by negativity, but indirectly by my own positive actions. Winning the Basketball tournament 2 years in a row, my past had made me confident for a 3rd win. Beyond confident, I was teetering between arrogance and superciliousness, both of which weren't a good side to be on.

All these states always left me feeling depressed and sad at the end of the day and after some serious time out and meditation, I realized the key to freedom from the past.

There is no magic formula to achieve sustained and serene mental peace it. It's really all about Just LETTING GO OF THE PAST. Just let it go...  Every time something happens that agitates you, just be glad nothing worse happened and LET IT GO . Every time someone tries to put you on the spot, bless them for spending so much energy on you and just LET IT GO, Whenever you make a mistake or falter somewhere, its o.k., pick yourself up and LET IT GO, Whenever You achieve some great feat or great goal, Good for you, don't hold on to it and become egotistical. Be modest and humble and thank god for the strength and then LET IT GO, as well. Every time something happens that makes you feel fearful, anxious, uncomfortable, depressed or unhappy. Just remember all the good times you had in your life and LET THE BAD GO. Now I know that letting go can be difficult and to be honest, initially it is. But there were two things that really cemented the power and thought of "LETTING GO" in my mind.

1) Let me start with a story I once heard. "There were two monks traveling through the Jungles, heading for the monastery at its end. One of them was an aged and wise Master Monk. The other was his young pupil, still under training. On there journey across a stream, flowing through the forest, they came across a beautiful maiden with her cloths in tatters. She had been robbed and was unable to walk. Upon further inquiring, they discovered that her village lied on their path. She begged them to help her. The young monk was captivated by her beauty, but knew it was against their code to touch a woman. The Master Monk, not wasting much time, lifted her and carried her to her village. They safely brought her to her village, and then left for their destination. Throughout the journey, the young pupil was filled with questions and condemnation for his master’s actions. Upon reaching the monastery, the pupil asked the master, “Master, Why did you carry that women with you, back at the stream and then leave her till her village?" The young monk felt cheated and was quite rude in his questioning. The Old monk calmly answered, “My young apprentice, I have left that girl behind at her village because she needed my help, but have you left her yet?"

This story made me really understand the concept of letting go clear as crystal. It's all about doing what you have to do or bearing with what you have to, and then just letting it go. Releasing all energy, thoughts, emotions and feelings associated with it. Clearing the mind of its shackles and finding that elusively obvious Mental Peace.

2) The second technique I've found, that helps me let go of a lot of negative things, is to create and use a very strong Positive anchor. Look into your past and find a feeling so strong and positive that it still possesses that feeling and energy to re summon happiness and bliss. Just remind yourself of that thought, that moment , that feeling and use it whenever you need to let go of something unpleasant. I personally find that LOVE works the best here. I remind myself of the beautiful women who’s waiting for me back home and how no negativity can measure up against  the happiness I feel when I'm with her. OR no matter how bad things get, i have my music and friends, to bring back the joy in my life.

In these moments, the negative past is like a heavy rain cloud trying to float up into the endless azure skies of heaven. It's just not happening. Remind yourself that no matter what happens, it doesn't have to make a difference and just LET IT GO.

Our time is NOW. To be as radically honest as I can. There is NO such thing as the past and no such thing as the future. They just don't exist. Think about it. Do they really matter? It's not like you can do anything, except think, about them. All we can truly do and control is to live in the NOW and , the PRESENT. Why waste time thinking about things that don't exist? True mental piece is when you’re free from the burdens of time and are free to just focus on THIS MOMENT RIGHT NOW. Now is all we have and all we'll ever have. So let everything else just go...
